ST. PAUL, Minn. - Bethel advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament by defeating St. Benedict 3-0 (30-19, 20-28, 30-23) in a regional game at the University of St. Thomas.

The Royals, ranked #23 on the CSTV/AVCA Division III coaches' poll, were led by Stephanie Schmidt (So., Montgomery, MN) with 14 kills.  This year's MIAC MVP, Liz Glesne (Sr., Underwood, MN) had 10 kills, 12 digs, and two service aces.

Emma Jaynes led the Blazers with 14 kills, 15 digs, a service ace, and a block.

Bethel is making just its third NCAA playoff appearance, and first since 2001 when head coach Gretchen Hunt took over the reins.  In that tournament, they won their first round game 3-0 over Hunter College, but lost to coach Hunt's alma mater, Central College, in the second round.

The win improves Bethel's record to 24-8 overall.  They go on to face UW-Whitewater tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
