MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Bethel got two goals in the last 61 seconds of their game against St. Thomas to force overtime, but ultimately fell 6-5 to the Tommies in the extra period.
The Royals led 2-0 after the first period, but for the second night in a row, St. Thomas scored three goals in the second period to Bethel's one, making the score 3-3.
St. Thomas scored within the first minute, then again at the halfway point of the third period to make it 5-3.
Bill Menozzi (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) scored his first goal of the season at the 18:59 mark of the third period with help from Brad Peterson (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.). Peterson then scored a goal of his own 36 seconds later with the help of Jeff Balvin (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and John Kovacs (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) to pull even with St. Thomas 5-5.
Unfortunately, Bethel's momentum came to a screeching halt when the Tommies Alex Coles scored his second goal of the season just 1:14 into the overtime period to give St. Thomas the win and season sweep of Bethel.
The Royals drop to 4-2-0 overall and 0-2-0 in MIAC play while St. Thomas improves to 5-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference. Bethel travels up to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night for their next game.
