Tommies top Royals 4-1 in conference opener

BLAINE, Minn. – Rob Johnson and Alex Arneson each had a goal and an assist for St. Thomas as they went on to defeat Bethel 4-1 in a rematch of last season's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship playoff game.

The Tommies scored once in the first period and three times in the second period to give them their lead.

Ian Vanbiesbrouck (Fr., Detroit, Mich.) scored his first collegiate goal for Bethel 8:41 into the second period for the Royals lone goal.  He was assisted by Dan Bonne (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.), who now has four assists on the season.

Aaron Damjanovich (So., Remer, Minn.) made 24 saves on the night for the Royals.

The loss is Bethel's first of the season, making them 4-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the MIAC.  St. Thomas improves to 4-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference.  The two teams face off again tomorrow at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn.
