Sowles scores 7th goal of season, Bethel ties St. Olaf 1-1

October 9, 2007

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Hot or cold, rain or shine, the women's soccer team has played in it all this season.  After losing 2-1 to Carleton in Northfield last Saturday in sweltering heat for a Minnesota October, the Royals returned home and played to a 1-1 tie against St. Olaf just three days later and 40 degrees colder.  The only extreme that has served Bethel well has been a steady rain downpour, as they have scored 16 goals in two games under those conditions.

Bethel got on the board first when Esther Sowles (Jr., Waconia, MN) scored her 7th goal of the season on a pass from Allison Kishaba (So., Eau Claire, WI) barely 10 minutes into the game. The goal puts her in 4th place on Bethel's all-time leading goal scorers list, just two behind fellow teammate Jessie Tschetter (Sr., Sioux Falls, SD) who has 19 in her career.

The lead would not hold, though, as St. Olaf's Kira Price scored with an assist from Jess Magnuson at 17:36 into the second half.

Both the Oles and the Royals had multiple shots on goal that came close, but did find the back of the net.  Perhaps the most notable was a shot taken in the first half by Bethel's Kelsey Dewey (Fr., Buffalo, NY) that sailed over the head of Ole goaltender Elizabeth Huggins, but hit the top crossbar and bounced back into play.

Charli Sorensen (Jr., Park Ridge, IL) grabbed 18 saves for the Royals, including 3 in the first overtime period.

Bethel now has a 1-4-2 record in the MIAC and is 5-6-2 overall. They gained a point in the standings with the tie, but remain tied for 9th place in the conference.  St. Olaf is now 2-3-1 in the MIAC and 2-9-2 overall.

The Royals hit the road for the remainder of their schedule, playing next at 4 p.m. on Thursday in River Falls.
