MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Royals women's soccer team had their undefeated streak snapped at three games, 1-0 to Augsburg, on a night when five yellow cards were issued between the two teams.
Bethel goaltender Charli Sorensen (Jr., Park Ridge, IL) also saw her scoreless streak snapped just shy of 239 minutes when Augsburg's Lacey Hoover scored her 5th goal of the season at the 20:20 mark of the first half. Hoover's goal came after she rebounded teammate Felicia Faison's shot from 45-yards out, giving the Auggies all they would need.
Augsburg limited Bethel to just 5 shots total – an uncharacteristically low number for a team that averaged more than 21 shots per game entering tonight's competition.
Things got a little physical, if not downright ugly in the second half when Bethel and Augsburg were cited five yellow cards – 3 for the Auggies and 2 for the Royals. Four of the five infractions came in a span of just under five minutes. The last yellow card came as a result of a delayed throw-in with one second remaining on the play clock.
The loss drops Bethel to 2-5-2 in the MIAC, and 7-7-2 overall with just 2 games remaining. Augsburg moves to 6-3-1 in the MIAC – tied for 3rd place with Macalester – and 8-6-3 overall. The Royals next game will be next Wednesday in Moorhead as they take on the Concordia Cobbers at 1 p.m.
