Royals lose heartbreaker to nationally ranked Gustavus 1-0 in OT

October 13, 2007

Nick Kantor

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - For 97:32, fans at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex witnessed a small miracle.  For 97:32, the Bethel Royals men's soccer team held nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus (#19 D3Kicks.com) scoreless.  But it was at the 97:32 mark that the Gusties Fraser Horton found the back of the net with the help of Stefan Kolis, giving Gustavus a 1-0 overtime win over Bethel.

The Royals knew they would have their work cut out for them both offensively and defensively today.  Gustavus goalie Trevor Brown leads NCAA Division III men's soccer in save percentage as he had only allowed one goal all season.  That total did not change today.  Bethel only accumulated 6 shots on goal, while Gustavus had 22.

Bethel goalie Nick Kantor (So., Buffalo, MN) played as well as anyone could have asked, racking up 21 saves, including several shots directly in front of the net.  Both he and the defense were able to fend off 16 Gustie corner kicks in the game.

The loss moves Bethel to 3-12 overall and 0-7 in the MIAC.  Their next chance for their first conference win comes on Tuesday when they face Augsburg at the Orth Complex at 3:30.  The game against Augsburg is also Bethel's last home game of the season.
