ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bethel made a solid bid for the MIAC playoffs behind two solid pitching performances which resulted in a sweep of Hamline University.
In a classic pitcher's duel in game one, an eight-inning 1-0 Bethel win, senior
Ryan Mahoney, the MIAC's Pitcher of the Week, pitched all eight innings and gave up just two hits as he pitched his first shutout of the season. Hamline's Josh Roiger also went the distance as he gave up just eight hits.
Offensively, the Royals collected just eight hits, but received a timely hit in the bottom of the eighth when T.J. Therrien, after an
Alex Garee walk, doubled to the gap in right center which resulted in Garee scoring and Bethel getting the win.
In game two, Bethel jumped out early with three runs in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter
Zach Ludvigson bunted for a single and after stealing second, advanced to third on a
Kirby Carr sacrifice fly and scored on a past ball. In the second inning, Bethel collected three hits by Therrien,
Mike Gaustad, and
Travis Wermedal which resulted in two runs.
Bethel added their fourth and final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on two singles by
Alex Garee and T.J. Therrien.
Freshman
John Buteyn went the complete seven innings for the Royals as he gave up just six hits in the 4-1 Bethel win.
Bethel's next game is Wednesday, May 4 when they host Carleton College. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
