ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bethel University held on for a 34-24 win after a second half scare by the Beavers from Buena Vista in the season opener for both teams.

Chris Evans put the ball in the end zone for Bethel from four yards out in the second quarter. On a two point conversion try, Scott Jamison returned an intercepted pass 100 yards to make the score 20-2 going into half time.
After
John Croyle caught an opening drive touchdown for the Royals in the third quarter, Buena Vista started to turn the tide by opening up their passing game. Chris Whitson caught a four- yard touchdown reception from Craig Novacek, and the Beavers punched in 2 more short yardage runs for scores to make the score 26-24 after a failed 2-point conversion late in the fourth quarter.
Peter Eastland put the game out of reach with an interception with 50 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Royals.
Phil Porta led all rushers with 139 yards on the ground, while compiling 69 yards receiving as well and two touchdowns on the day. Bethel 's defense was the difference while allowing only 11 yards rushing. Justin Wiig caught eight passes for 149 yards to lead the Beavers.
