Bethel begins conference play with 42-6 win over St. Olaf

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.
- Bethel University used a high scoring offense and a timely defense in route to a 42-6 conference opening win over St. Olaf.

Sophomore running back Phil Porta ( Cambridge , Minn. ) led the ground attack for the Royals racking up 225 yards with two touchdowns. Quarterback A.J. Parnell ( Kirkland , Wash. )added 160 yards through the air adding 2 touchdowns while senior wide receiver Zach Ludvigson ( Minnetonka , Minn. ) led all receiver with 94 yards and one touchdown on five receptions.

Bethel opened the scoring with a 92 yard drive capped off by a 3 yard toss from Parnell to tight end Paul Scrabeck ( Alden , Minn. ). Porta continued the scoring with a 14-yard run to put Bethel up 14-0.

St. Olaf answered with a 40 yard field goal off the leg of Paul Fortman ( Stillwater , Minn. ). Bethel took charge from that point forward scoring the next 28 points. The scoring included a three yard touchdown run by fullback Chris Evans (Johnston, Iowa) capping a drive that included a 60 yard run by Porta with 10:17 left in the second quarter.

Other scoring in the second quarter included a 30 yard reception by Ludvigson, a 22-yard run from Porta, and a 52 yard interception return by cornerback Jon Evans ( Johnston , Iowa ).

The Oles added a field goal with 1:46 left in the fourth quarter to wrap up the scoring. The Bethel defense was able to hold Ole offense 113 passing yards with three interceptions on the day.

The Royals travel down Snelling Avenue next Saturday to take on Hamline. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
