NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Bethel University's
Phil Porta carried 37 times for a school record 264 yards and three scores, all in the second quarter, as the Royals held off host Carleton College, 21-6, at Laird Stadium this afternoon.
Porta tallied scoring runs of 19, 9 and 21 yards, all in the second quarter, keying a Bethel ground attack that racked 390 yards on the day. The win allowed Bethel (4-4, 3-3 MIAC) to snap a three-game losing streak as the Royals out-gained Carleton 459-317 in total offense. Porta's total broke Jeremy Tvedt's 1995 record of 243 yards. The total leaves Porta with 1,415 yards on the season, only 48 yards shy of breaking Mike Johnson's single-season Bethel record of 1,462 yards, set during the 2001 season.
Carleton (1-7, 0-6 MIAC) was paced by sophomore quarterback's Darren Caspers' 19-for-38 passing for 211 yards. Kicker Pat Barry booted field goals of 19 and 36 yards to account for Carleton's scoring. The two field goals moved Barry alone into third on Carleton's all-time field goal list with 14.
Carleton drew first blood, embarking on a 12-play, 71-yard drive. It stalled out at the 4-yard line, and Barry booted his first field goal to stake the hosts to a 3-0 lead.
Bethel tallied 147 rushing yards in the second quarter, as Porta carried 18 times for 115 yards in the stanza as Bethel scored all of its points in a nine-minute span and held the ball for nearly 11 minutes in the period. Carleton's Barry kicked a season-long 36-yard field goal on the final play of the half, as the Knights marched 58 yards in 1:29 after Bethel's third touchdown.
Neither team mounted a serious scoring threat in the second half, although the Knights pushed to the Bethel 17-yard line in the final two minutes, but were unable to punch it in for the score.
Mike Kootsikas led the Knights' receivers with seven catches for 84 yards and tight end Alex Marston added 59 yards on four receptions. Rookie running back R.J. Jackson carried 14 times for 49 yards. Safety Luke Muellerleile tallied a career-high 17 tackles and sophomore linebacker Randy Foss added 16 stops for Carleton.
Kirby Carr paced the Royals' defense with eight tackles, seven solo, and added a sack and three tackles for losses. The Royals held the Knights to a mere 106 yards rushing and 3-for-17 on third-down conversions. The Royals tallied four sacks.
Carleton ends its home schedule next week, hosting Gustavus Adolphus College, while the Royals host Augsburg College. Both games kick off at 1 p.m.
