MINNEAPOLIS - Bethel overcame a sluggish first three quarters and scored 22 points in the final quarter to defeat Carleton at the Metrodome.
The Royals scored the first 10 points of the game, scoring on a three-yard TD run by
Brett Brodeen (Gladstone, MI) and a 27 yard field by
Seth Olson (Bloomington, MN). The Knights countered with two field goals by James Adducci.
The teams traded scores to end the half and to begin the second half as Carleton took 26-25 lead into the fourth quarter. Bethel responded with three straight touchdowns, a five yard pass from
Bart Becker (Conrad, MT) to
Jeremy Belisle (Elk River, MN), a three-yard run by
Josh Savageau (Blaine, MN ), and a two-yard run by Becker.
The Royals were led by Savageau with 148 yards rushing on 27 carries. He became Bethel's first 1,000 yard rusher since Jeremy Tvedt in 1996.
Jeremy Belisle caught five passes for 73 yards and one touchdown to add to his career records. Becker completed 14 of 25 passes for 157 yards, with one interception and one touchdown.
Defensively, the Royals were led by senior strong safety
Kirk Midthun (Dodge Center, MN) and sophomore defensive end
Rick Meyer (Dodge Center, MN) with seven tackles each.
The Knights were led by running back Kyle Swartout with 106 yards. Quarterback Jesse Anderson threw for 129 yards and three touchdowns, with Dan Reider hauling in two touchdowns.
