Playoff Champions

[Schedule | Stats (PDF) | Roster]

The 1990-91 men's basketball squad captured the program's first-ever MIAC Playoff title as underdogs entering the tournament as the last team in with the No. 4 seed. Coming off a win over Saint John's to concluded the regular season, Bethel faced another tough task taking on top-seeded St. Thomas.

The underdogs rose to the occasion on the road -  avenging a two point lost to the Tommies from seven days earlier - with a 74-71 overtime victory. Behind the MIAC Player of the Year Dale Turnquist and MIAC Coach of the Year George Palke, the Royals squeaked out another one possession game earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with a 73-70 victory over Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter.

The Royals finished the MIAC season 15-5 earning a share of its first-ever regular season title. Bethel earned the two seed in the MIAC Playoffs posting a 57-53 win over Carleton in the semifinals. In front of a capacity Robertson Center crowd the Royals faced fourth-seeded Saint John's in one of the more memorable MIAC Playoff championship games.

Tied at 72-72 the Royals and Johnnies were trading big shot for big shot before Trevor Hall worked the left side of the lane and banked in a runner to put Bethel back in front – this time for good – with 10 seconds left. Bridgeport Tusler jumped a passing lane and got a steal on the ensuing possession before making three of four free throws in the closing seconds to salt away a historic win. The 79-75 victory gave Bethel the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament where they were making the program's second appearance.

That season, BU said goodbye to seniors Brycen Wojta and Trevor Hall, who collectively helped BU finish with a 72-37 (.661) record over their four-year career—the best by any class at that point.
