SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A few members of the Bethel University women's track and field team made their presence known by finishing among the top five in their events at the 85th annual Howard Wood Relays. Both
Marie Borner (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) and
Heather Jelen (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) earned top spots in the 1500 and 800 meter runs, respectively.
Borner won the 1500 meter race with a time of 4:32.99, which was more than seven seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Teammate and Jelen finished in third with a time of 4:44.25. Jelen also did her hometown well by finishing first in the college division of the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.34, while Borner competed in the feature event of the 800 meter run and finished fourth with a time of 2:09.96, which is less than half of a second off of her NCAA automatic qualifying time from two weeks ago.
Other notable finishes for Bethel include
Vanessa Moore's (Sr., Grantsburg, Wis.) fifth place finish in the high jump, as she cleared 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) and a fouth place finish for the 4 x 400 meter relay team with a time of 4:02.04.
The two-day meet served as a final tune up for the MIAC Championships, scheduled to begin next Friday at 2 p.m. in Northfield, Minn., on the campus of Carleton College.
