OSHKOSH, Wis. - In what could be a preview of the NCAA national championship meet, Bethel's
Marie Borner (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) and UW-Oshkosh's Ayla Mitchell finished in the top two slots of the Brooks Invitational. Unfortunately, it was Borner who took second place for just the first time since the Griak Invitational last year.
Borner's time of 20:35.68 was just seven seconds back of Mitchell, whom Borner defeated earlier this year at the Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota. Her second place finish helped the Royals, ranked #11 nationally in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, finish in sixth place out of 34 teams behind four other nationally ranked teams and a Division II team.
Behind Borner was
Heather Jelen (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.), who finished in 22nd out of 466 runners at 22:14.
Kristin Mork (Jr., Cambridge, Minn.) pulled in 14 seconds later in 32nd place with a time of 22:28.
Alex Potter (Jr., Windom, Minn.) and
Kayla Jelen (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) rounded out Bethel's top five runners, all of whom finished in the top 75, at 22:54 and 23:09, respectively.
The Royals will enjoy a weekend off before the MIAC Championships, scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 31, at Como Park in St. Paul.
