Coach Fregeau Steps Aside From Football, Assumes New Role at Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—After 32 years of coaching—18 of which were at Bethel—Mike Fregeau will be stepping aside from the game of football. Fregeau and his family made a decision together that it was in their best interest for him to step back from the gridiron, while continuing in a different role at the university.

Going forward Fregeau will continue to oversee the Sports and Recreation Center, while also serving as the field manager at both Bremer Field and Ona Orth Complex and assisting in game management.

"My family and I have been on this journey together and we believe this is what's best going forward," said Fregeau. "Many coaches don't get to go out on their own terms, but I am fortunate to be able to have this opportunity."

Fregeau came to Bethel as a student (and football player) in 1981 and later joined the coaching staff in 1998. Throughout his time, he's been a part of all five MIAC championships, all eight NCAA Division III Playoff appearances, and both NCAA Division III region championships. As a result of the team's success, he has earned great respect from football coaches and players across the league.

"Bethel has transformed me both as a student and coach, and I'm hopeful that I've played a small part in transforming others along their journey," commented Fregeau. "I'm ready to pass the torch on to the next coach, while still continuing to be the biggest supporter of this program and institution."

"I want to extend my gratitude to the Bethel football staff and athletic department for an amazing 18 years in this role, and to Coach Johnson for his leadership."

Over his 18-year tenure with the Royals Fregeau has directly coached 16 MIAC All-Conference and nine MIAC All-Conference Second Team football players. Moreover, Fregeau aided Kirby Carr in his 2006 MIAC MVP campaign and Jon Foss in his bid to become the NCAA's sack leader in 2002 (16).

"Mike has played a large part in our team's success over the last 18 years," noted head football coach Steve Johnson. "He has poured his heart and life into Bethel and Bethel football, and for that I am grateful. He expected a lot out of his players, both on and off the field, which helped shape our culture of becoming tough, grateful, and devoted men."

Fregeau will begin his new position at Bethel immediately.

"This has been a special place for my immediate family, as each one of us are alums," said Fregeau. "That's why I have been so proud to teach, coach, and serve here. Going forward, I'll just be teaching, coaching, and serving in a little different role."
