RESULTSST. PAUL-Victories in the 1,000-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay highlighted the Royal's season-opening performance at Friday night's St. Thomas Invite.
In the 1,000, junior
Connor Haugen took the lead early and never relinquished it, crossing the line in a time of 2:39.59. Freshman
Evan Hatton finished second in 2:40.14.
The men's 4x400 team of
Marshal Lortie (Sr.), Haugen,
Carl Klamm (Fr.) and
Dan Wahlstedt (So.) won with a time of 3:31.51, besting a field that included three other Bethel squads. The team of
Phillip Anderson (So.),
Patrick Klamm (Jr.),
Keith Vollendorf (So.) and Hatton finished second in 3:34.36.
Sophomore
Charles Johnson blasted out of the blocks in the 60-meter dash and held off all but one competitor to finish second in a time of 7.07.
A strong finish from C. Klamm in the 600-meter run earned him second in 1:22.21, one spot of ahead of P. Klamm who finished in 1:24.78.
Despite fouling four of six throws, returning conference champion
Bryce DeBoer (Sr.) finished second in the shot put with a toss of 46'8" (14.22 meters). DeBoer added another runner-up finish in the weight throw with a mark of 52'4.75" (15.97m).
P. Anderson placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.14 seconds.
"We had several performers finish in the top three in their events which was exciting to see," said head coach
Andrew Rock. "We have a nice contingent of young talent so it was nice to see how they will complement some of our upperclassmen this season."
The Royals return to action Friday, Jan. 29 in Northfield for the St. Olaf Triangular.
