MINNEAPOLIS – The Bethel University women's hockey team was dealt a blow by the Augsburg College Auggies with a 2-0 defeat on Saturday night, failing to complete a series sweep of Augsburg as the Auggies jumped back ahead of the Royals by one point in the MIAC standings. Just 24 hours after equaling their season high with four goals in Friday night's victory, the Royals were shutout by Augsburg.
The Auggies scored their first goal midway through the second period and added the second on an empty net with just 33 seconds remaining to take the victory.
Michelle Klimstra made 32 saves while allowing just the one goal for Bethel. Neither team scored on the power play as Augsburg was 0-for-6 and Bethel was 0-2, despite getting off five shots on goal in their second power play late in the second period and to start the third period.
The loss moves Augsburg (8-6-1, 5-2-1 MIAC) back into a second place tie with St. Thomas (who finishes their MIAC series with Saint Mary's on Sunday), one point ahead of Bethel (6-6-2, 4-2-2 MIAC) in fourth place. The Royals will take on Saint Benedict next weekend but first will host a rare Monday night non-conference matchup with the No. 3-ranked Adrian College Bulldogs. Adrian leads the nation in goals per game at 5.13 and enters with a record of 13-2.
