Fond du Lac, Wis. – The streets of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin are now a lot cleaner as the Bethel University baseball team swept Marian University today by the final scores of 5-0 and 15-1. The Royals pair of wins over the Sabres—a team that has already won the NACC regular season championship—marked the fourth road sweep of the season and the sixth shutout of the year. Following Tuesday's results, BU improved to 27-6 on the season, while maintaining their 13-3 mark in conference play. Elsewhere around the league Tuesday, Saint Mary's University was swept at Concordia, so Bethel is assured the No. 1 seed in the 2015 MIAC Playoffs.
The Royals certainly had their way at the plate, pouring in 20 runs on 29 hits over the two games combined, but it was BU's pitchers that were dominant throughout the 16 innings of work.
Matt Herringshaw improved to 4-1 on the season with a two-hit, two-walk gem in Tuesday's opener. The right-handed starter struck out seven in the complete-game shutout.
It was
Tyler Heitmann that got the nod in game two, and Heitmann improved to 8-0 on the year with an eight-hit, zero-walk effort in six innings pitched. Heitmann struck out four, while allowing one run (unearned).
Carson Selin and
Sean Glenn pitched the final three innings in relief and mowed down nine batters with five strikeouts, zero walks, and one hit surrendered.
Bethel pumped out nine hits and five runs in the 11 a.m. contest and followed that with 20 hits and 15 runs in the 2 p.m. matchup. Following his incredible at-bat that led to the game-tying run that scored in BU's 11-10 win over Hamline,
Bret Neuville had an exceptional day as he finished 5-for-8 (including a triple) at the plate with two RBI's and three runs scored. Fresh off of his MIAC Baseball Player of the Week award,
Jarad Watts too went 5-for-8 throughout the day with one run driven in.
Grant Anderson continued his recent terror, as Bethel's right fielder went 3-for-5 with two walks and four runs scored. Meanwhile, in just his fourth collegiate start
Austin Ledin batted 3-for-6 on the day with three walks, five runs batted in, and one run scored. Ledin drove in four runs throughout game two on a sacrifice fly in the second, a single in the fourth, and a two-run single in the eighth.
Due to the cancellation of Wednesday's home doubleheader against St. Olaf, Bethel will not play until Sunday, May 3. At which point, the Royals travel to Winona to face Saint Mary's in the final games of the regular season. BU then travels down Snelling to face Northwestern in an evening twin bill on May 5 before returning to the MIAC Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.
