GRINNELL, Iowa – The Bethel University men's track and field team traveled to Grinnell College over the weekend to compete in the Darren Young Classic, which yielded more strong results for the Royals Saturday. Headlined by stellar competition, the 2015 edition featured nationally-ranked talent and new scenery for the BU, who is quickly approaching the close of the indoor season.
"It was a great test for us to match up against some different competitors and I think this experience will help us immensely going forward," said head coach Andrew Rock.
Similarly to the women's squad, the men shined in the middle-distance events, particularly in the 1-mile run. Senior and team captain Matt Berens won the event with a time of 4:22.17 while teammates Connor Haugen and Christian Svenes recorded new personal bests for the season as well as finishing in the top-ten.
In the field events, the Royals continued to impress in the pole vault and weight throw events while also capturing a top-three finish in the long jump. Senior recipient of last week's team athlete-of-the-week award, Cody Britt, won the pole vault with a height of 4.30 meters while teammate Bryce DeBoer, who earned MIAC field athlete-of-the-week ascended to the top-25 in the nation with another school-record in the weight throw.
The men's team will now begin preparations for next weekend's pair of competitions at the University of Minnesota on Friday night followed by a trip to St. Olaf College on Saturday. With just two weeks remaining before the conference championships, the Royals are entering the peak of the indoor season.
