BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team was forced to settle with a 3-3 tie against No. 17 Lake Forest College. In a well-played, action packed game, the Royals and Foresters went back and forth with neither team able to land the knockout blow despite several close calls. The two teams combined for 79 shots, Bethel taking 46 of them.
For the second straight night the Royals struck first.
Jackson Purvis scored the Royals first goal just 4:47 into the game with
Brock Raffaele and
Mitch Hughes on the assists. Lake Forest was able to tie it back up nine minutes later. Bethel then converted a power play opportunity into a goal when
Eric Szafranski got one through.
JT Walters and
Michael Chuinard assisted Walters. Less than two-minutes later however, Lake Forest tied things back. The two squads headed to the intermission at 2-2. Lake Forest converted a power play opportunity just over six minutes into the third period to take a 3-2 lead. The game would remain that way until Bethel's
Grant Dye was able to scored at 7:19 in the third period.
Al Nejmeh assisted Dye. Neither team scored in the final 18 minutes of the game and the game ended in the draw. Lake Forest declined an opportunity to have a shootout to follow the game. The MIAC is the only conference in NCAA hockey to run a shootout after overtime.
Bethel's
Will Griswold, making his second consecutive start, made 30 saves for the Royals. Each team scored a power play goal with Lake Forest having just two opportunites, while Bethel had three.
The Royals next action will be a big MIAC series with Saint Mary's University. The men travel down to Winona, Minnesota next Friday for a 7 p.m. game and will then host the Cardinals on Saturday at 7 p.m.
