Bethel University had numerous highlights throughout the entire 2013-14 season and over the course of the next two weeks BethelRoyals.com will capture the Top 10 team and individual performances that stuck out above the rest. Coming in at No. 10 was what a pair of dyper dandies accomplished in their freshman campaign.
Carlee Hoppe, a Shakopee, Minn., native was honored with  the 2013 MIAC Rookie of the Year award after a sensational first year. The only freshman to receive All-MIAC accolades last season, Hoppe finished the year with 4.19 kills per set throughout conference play, which ranked second overall, and 151 kills, which finished third. Overall, Hoppe finished with 3.91 kills per set and 360 kills, with both again being among the Top 5 conference wide. Bethel's outside hitter also contributed 321 digs, 37 blocks, and 26 serving aces. Hoppe helped Bethel finish the season 14-15 with a 5-6 record in conference play.
Another freshman phenom that enjoyed a breakout year was basketball player
Brycen Wojta. Wojta was also the only freshman selected to the All-MIAC Men's Basketball list and was a member of the five-player All-First-Year team. The Maple Grove, Minn., native averaged 15.0 points, 3.4 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game, while scoring in double figures in 20 of the Royals 27 games. Among those 20 games in double figures, Wojta put up 21 or more points. Wojta ranked fourth among all MIAC players in total points (404) and first in total steals (51). Finally, Wojta completed his first-year campaign shooting 45.7 percent from the floor, 35.1 percent from downtown, and 81.4 percent from the free throw line. The guard helped Bethel reach in its 13th postseason in the last 15 years with a 9-11 record in loop play and a 14-13 mark overall.
Wojta also received an invitation to play with the USA Sports Division III national team that will tour Brazil this summer. Read more about his upcoming experiences
