Three Top Performances Headline Pre-MIAC Meet for Bethel

ST. PAUL—Bethel University continued its success on the track and in the field at the Pre-MIAC meet held at Macalester College Friday evening. The Royals claimed 13 Top 5 performances, including three No. 1 finishes, in their final meet before the 2014 MIAC Championships next weekend.
 
Matt Schafer, Zack Haskins, and Matt Berens all captured first place finishes Friday night. Schafer edged out 11 competitors in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:22.40, which was over two seconds faster than the closest foe.
 
Teammate Zach Haskins eclipsed the field in the 800-meter race, completing the run in 1:54.59. Haskins's time in the event is ranked in the Top 20 nationwide behind teammate Matt Schafer, who is ranked No. 4 nationally.
 
Matt Berens was the final Bethel track and field member to take first place at the Macalester Pre-MIAC meet. Berens grabbed first place in the 1-mile event with a time of 4:22.49
 
Several others finished second in their respective events. Among those to take second were Patrick Klamm in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.18 and Thomas Lokkesmoe in the triple jump with a leap of 11.94 meters. Bryce DeBoer also grabbed second place in the weight throw with a toss of 15.73 meters.
 
Zach Barringer had a solid meet as well, placing third and fourth in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, respectively. Barringer's third place finish in the 60-meter dash was achieved with a sprint of 7.17 seconds and Barringer crossed the finish line in the 200-meter dash in 23.30 seconds.
 
The Royals take on the rest of the conference opponents at the MIAC Championships. Bethel, who is still looking to secure individual places at the NCAA Division III meet, will compete in the two-day event next Friday and Saturday hosted at Saint John's University.
