BLOOMINGTON, Minn.—The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced the 2014 football awards Tuesday afternoon. Among the list of recipients are 18 honorees from Bethel, including seven on the First Team, six on the Second Team, four among the honorable mentions, and one All-Sportsmanship beneficiary.
Â
FIRST TEAM(
Marshall Klitzke,
Bubba Friedlund,
Will Van Duzer,
Landon Mathis,
Kevin Flaherty,
Ben Wahlquist,
Josh Treimer)
Â
Among the seven first team honorees were two offensive players and five members of the Bethel defense.
Marshall Klitzke and
Bubba Friedlund were the two offensive players selected, which for Friedlund, it was his second consecutive award. Klitzke, who received his first All-MIAC award, led the team and the conference in rushing touchdowns in loop play. His 6.3 yards per carry ranked second and his 97.1 yards per game ranked third among all ball carriers.
Â
Defensively, three linebackers were selected, including middle linebacker
Landon Mathis as well as alleys,
Kevin Flaherty and
Ben Wahlquist. Meanwhile,
Will Van Duzer and
Josh Treimer were also First Team honorees. Unfortunately for the Royals, both First Team defensemen
Landon Mathis and
Will Van Duzer were out due to injuries the final two games of the season. Treimer, who returned for a fifth season under the medical red-shirt rule, finished fourth among all individuals nationwide in passes defended and first among conference opponents with 16 total breakups.
Â
SECOND TEAM(
Erik Peterson,
Brandon Marquardt,
Bryce Marquardt,
Dillon Crum,
Kyle Asmus,
David Morgan)
Â
In addition to the seven honored to the first team, six were included on the Second Team. Following a MVP performance in the 2013 campaign, Peterson added 1,642 yards and 15 touchdowns in conference play to his overall career statistics.
Bryce Marquardt finished fourth among league opponents in receptions (48), yards (823), yards per game (102.9), and touchdowns (10), but was second in yards per catch (17.1).
Brandon Marquardt added seven total touchdowns, including two kickoff returns to the end zone.
Â
Dillon Crum,
Kyle Asmus, and
David Morgan all played critical roles in Bethel's success. Crum, like Friedlund, was a member of the offensive line that allowed just six sacks all year long, which ranked No. 4 among all teams nationwide. Like Van Duzer, Asmus was critical to the linebackers success, which is why three were among the MIAC First Team. Finally, after switching back to the secondary
David Morgan was able to record 63 tackles, four interceptions, seven breakups, and three fumble recoveries.
Â
HONORABLE MENTION(
Daniel Leidall,
Drew Neuville,
Bridgeport Tusler,
Stein Johnson)
Â
Four players on the Royals squad were honored to the honorable mention list of awardees. Among those to receive this accolade was
Daniel Leidall, who finished the year with a team-leading 70 tackles, including five tackles for loss. Tight end
Drew Neuville completed the year with 19 receptions, 249 yards, and two touchdowns, while running back
Bridgeport Tusler, who was used all over the field, tallied six total touchdowns and 1,039 all-purpose yards.
Stein Johnson started the final six games and played all but three snaps against Concordia College in week four.Â
Â
SPORTSMANSHIP TEAM(
Cory Hansen)
Â
As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC announced the ninth annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for football. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. Cory Hanson was Bethel's representative after a dynamite senior season on special teams.
