Mathis will enter the 2013 season highly touted—already a 2012 NFCA and D3football.com First Team All-American. Meanwhile, he'll also be chasing Sam Lacy's record for career tackles at Bethel University—needing just 27.5 tackles to better Lacy's mark.
Â
The 6-3, 240-pound linebacker finished 2012 with 130 tackles, five interceptions—including a returned pickoff for a touchdown, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. He and the Royals defense are eager to get back to 2011's success, after finishing the season as the No. 7 defense nationwide.
Â
Players report to preseason camp on August 21 with its opening game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Royal Stadium against Wartburg Colllege.
