Royals Win Third Straight with Victory over BLC

Box Score

MANKATO, Minn.—Bethel University's men's basketball picked up its first road win of the early 2013-14 season Tuesday night with a nonconference win over Bethany Lutheran College. The Royals (3-1, 0-0 MIAC) shot 54.9 percent from the floor and an exceptional 52.4 percent from downtown to overtake the Vikings (0-3, 0-0 UMAC) at the SFC North Gym, 75-63.

Tyler Schmidt capped off an early 12-2 run over the first 3:51 of the game, which propelled BU from the get go. BLC shrunk the Royals lead to five at the midway mark, but Bethel responded with an early run in the second half that pushed its lead to 10 with 17:03 remaining. A 20-6 run throughout the middle of the second half gave the Royals a 20-point margin, which allowed them to win by a final margin of 12.

Brycen Wojta, again, led Bethel's offense, shooting 6-of-9—5-of-6 from long range—and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe for 19 points. Wojta also finished with four rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Kyle Zimmermann was efficient as well, cashing in on 6-of-8 shots from the field for 12 points and seven rebounds, while also showing his defensive prowess with four blocks and three steals.

Tyler Schmidt tallied his first double-digit performance of his career with 11 points on a 3-of-4 night from downtown. Derek Wolhowe and Quinn Gorski added eight and seven points, respectively.

Bethel outrebounded Bethany Lutheran 33-29 and outscored the BLC 28-20 in the paint. This contributed to a 14-9 advantage in second-chance points. Moreover, the Royals outscored the Vikings 15-12 in points off turnovers.

BU is off until next Wednesday, December 4, when they travel to Winona, Minn., for their first conference test of the season. The Royals and Cardinals of Saint Mary's will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. Following Wednesday's duel against SMU, will be another road matchup at Macalester the ensuing Saturday at 3 p.m.
