Erik Smith Nominated for Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Smith among 117 student-athletes nominated to prestigious achievement

AFCA RELEASE

NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Recently Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced the nominees for the 2012 Good Works Team. Among the 117 nominees from 35 different states and five divisions (including BCS, FCS, Division II, III, and NAIA) was Erik Smith (Sr., Henning, Minn.), linebacker for the Bethel Royals football team.

According to AFCA, “The Good Works Team is one of college football's most prestigious off-the-field honors, as it recognizes a select group of college football players who are committed to making a difference in their communities.”

The award recognizes student-athletes for their commitment to volunteerism and giving back, while tackles and touchdowns have no bearing for the achievement. Players had to be nominated by their respective colleges and universities in order to be nominated for this honor. To be considered, each player had to be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group, or community service while maintaining a strong academic standing. Student-athletes from around the country showcased their inspiring stories through realms of comforting patients at children's hospitals to building homes for needy families.

Smith, like many, has spent much of his extra time volunteering with youth and adults in mentoring roles through several different outlets. Whether it was mentoring and tutoring elementary students or helping at his church or volunteering in his community, Smith has noteworthy experience that makes him an admirable candidate.

The outside linebacker is exceptional on the field as well. A First-Team All-MIAC player in 2011, Smith tallied 54 tackles (27 solo), including eight tackles for a loss. The Henning, Minn. native also took down the opposing quarterback three times and recovered one loose ball.

A special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will now select two 11-player Good Works Teams – one comprised of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (BCS) and another representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III, and the NAIA. The final roster of 22 award recipients will be revealed in September.

Smith and the Royals will report to camp in nearly three weeks, as players report to camp on August 15 for the 2013 season.
