ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Looking back on the 2011-12 season, Bethel University athletics enjoyed a number of incredible achievements and accolades. Several teams made monumental runs to the postseason, while certain individuals amped up their play to become star performers. Additionally, the Royals made plenty of noise off the playing surface throughout the entire year. With all that said, we will look at the Top 10 stories of the 2011-12 school year for Bethel athletics over the next ten days (one each day). Today, however, will highlight the No. 3 moment in this year's Top 10.
Haskins, Schafer reach All-American honors
Junior runners Matt Schafer and
Zach Haskins both advanced to the National NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Claremont, Calif. at the end of May in the 800-meter dash and 1500-meter run, respectively. Not only did both manage to get in the final heat of their respective events, but both composed All-American finishes,
Matt Schafer had perhaps the most success, as he took third place overall with his performance in the 800-meter dash. His time of 1:50.45 in the prelims not only qualified Schafer for the finals, but also his time clipped the 29-year old school record at Bethel University by .01 seconds. In the final heat Schafer delivered a 1:50.61, awarding the junior third place overall. For his performance Schafer was deemed as an All-American.
The other junior male competing was
Zachary Haskins, who excelled in the 1500-meter run. Haskins came in 12th in the prelims with his opening time of 3:54.60, however, he bettered his rank in the finals. The junior out of Maple Grove, Minn. produced a time of 3:57.11 to round out the group of All-Americans in the event.
The two, along with
Matt Berens and and
Zach Schlegel shattered a 29-year-old school-record in the distance medley relay at the 103rd running of the Drake Relays. Additionally Haskins and Schafer teamed up with Berens, and
Spencer Hinseth to record the best time among all Bethel University runners in the 4x800-meter relay.
