BU Grabs Win Over Northwestern (Iowa) and Falls to Carleton

An 8-1 route over NWC and 9-0 defeat to Carleton has Royals at 2-2

TEAM STATS

LAKEVILLE, Minn. –
The women's tennis team went 1-1 in the last week with win over Northwestern College (Iowa) and a loss to Carleton College last weekend. The Royals were nearly flawless on February 25th against the Raiders when defeating NWC 8-1 at the Sports and Recreation Center located on Bethel University. BU wasn't as fortunate last Friday, however, as the Knights handed Bethel its second loss of the season in a 0-9 affair.

In the competition against Northwestern College each doubles pair garnered a “W” as Steph Brown (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) and Lisa Scheevel (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) defeated the Raiders top duet 8-5. Kayla Wheeler (Jr., Oakdale, Minn.) and Kristin Vivian (Fr., Green Bay, Wis.) followed suite by defeating the No. 2 doubles duo out of Orange City, Iowa 8-0. Finally Shanna Burgmeier (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) and Abigail Kreklau (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) finished the doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles match.

Nearly every player in the singles category finished in the same manner, as the No. 2 through No. 6 players defeated their opponents in two sets. Lisa Scheevel fell in a competitive 4-6, 4-6 dual against the NWC No. 1. Steph Brown endured a 7-6 set in her first frame, ousting her opponent 7-4 in a tiebreaker, followed by a 6-2 finish in the second. Wheeler and Vivian allowed their opponent five games combined, as the two defeated its opponent 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-0, respectively. Amanda Johnson (So., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) started as the No. 5 singles player and defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-0. Finally Shanna Burgmeier closed out her competition with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Head Coach Dan Morton was excited, saying, “We played a great match, especially in the No. 1 Doubles and No. 2 singles competitions. Each athlete displayed good consistent strokes in each swing.

The Royals didn't fair as well against Carleton Friday, as the Knights routed BU 9-0 in the conference matchup. Despite not achieving a victory in any match, Bethel was highly competitive and nearly captured several wins.

The two closest matches were in the No. 2 and 3 doubles matchup, where both Kayla Wheeler and Kristin Vivian along with Shanna Burgmeier and Abigail Kreklau were defeated 6-8. Even though Scheevel and Brown were defeated 1-8 in their doubles matchu, Brown made a strong push to get revenge in her singles matchup, but fell 3-6, 3-6 in back-to-back frames. Both Amanda Johnson and Burgmeier were able to muster three games in one of their sets, but couldn't finish the deal in the end.

“We were simply off our shots,” commented Morton. “Several players displayed great character in the comeback opportunities that took place, however.”

The loss drops the Royals to 2-2 thus far on the season. BU will play its final meet before taking its annual spring break trip on March 16, as both the men's and women's team travel to Winona, Minn. to take on the Saint Mary's University Cardinals at 5 p.m.
