Spring Break Blog: Day 9

All four teams compete in final day of spring break trip

It was the final day of play, as each one of the team's ended its spring break trip with at least one contest Saturday. Sunday welcomes home both the softball and baseball team, while the Tennis squad will wait until Monday to get back to campus.

The baseball team finished its trip on the upswing, as the Royals defeated Lawrence University 7-1 in the two's second nine-inning contest of the week. After defeating the Vikings the day before 11-2, but leaving 18 runners stranded, Bethel was sure to capitalize on many opportunities in the second matchup between the two.

David Freed (Jr., North Oaks, Minn.) continues to swing a hot bat for BU, as the junior first baseman went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and scoring a run. The pitcher Matt Rowley (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and second baseman Ryan Hangartner (So., Watertown, Minn.) both knocked in two runs as well.

After a tougher outing against the College of Wooster last Monday, Rowley responded against Lawrence Saturday with six strikeouts, one walk, and one unearned run in seven innings pitched. Buddy Flaherty (Sr., Victoria, Minn.) pitched two innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

The softball team came back to the diamond Saturday for a two-game effort after battling three different teams Friday, including a 21-14 loss late in the evening. BU began Saturday well with a 9-3 win over Manchester College. The Royals scored nine runs on three timely hits and nine walks. Megan Matson (Jr., Mound, Minn.) led the way with three RBI's and a run scored.

Genna Bock (Sr., Circle Pines, Minn.) toed the rubber in the win, striking out eight batters, giving up four hits, and allowing one earned run in the complete-game victory.

Head Coach Rod Radcliffe and his squad couldn't close out the week of play with a “W” in its final game, however, as Bethel was outscored 12-5 in its showcase against Eastern Connecticut State University.

Matson and Angie Jackson (Fr., Oakdale, Minn.) both had two RBI's in game two, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Warriors.

Anja Erlandson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) struck out four, but gave up 14 hits and six walks, as ECSU scored eight earned runs.

The tennis clubs saw action Saturday as well, battling Oneonta College in its final match of the trip. Final results have not been submitted at this point, but are to come soon.

All teams will be back in action this upcoming week as the Royals prepare to face MIAC competition for the majority of the remaining season. Softball is the first to battle, as BU faces Gustavus Wednesday at the Ona Orth Complex.
