DULUTH, Minn. – Former Bethel hockey players and coaches Brad Frost ('96) and Joel Johnson ('96) helped lead the University of Minnesota women's hockey team to a national championship Monday, March 18, with a win over the defending champion University of Wisconsin Badgers.
Frost, a 1996 graduate, was named the head coach of the Gopher's women's hockey squad in 2008 and led the team to its second WCHA regular season championship in his second season. While at Bethel Frost was a four-year letterwinner in men's hockey and currently ranks eighth on the all-time scoring list with 119 points, and was also a two-year letter winner in golf. The two-year hockey captain was voted as the team's most valuable and most inspirational player in 1994 and 1995. The physical education major went on to coach one year of men's hockey at Bethel, followed by stints at New Life Academy, Mounds View, and Eagan school districts.
Johnson, also a 1996 graduate, returned to the Gopher's women's hockey team for the second time as an assistant coach in 2010. Previously Johnson had spent six years coaching the BU men's hockey team, which included three years as head coach. Johnson led the Royals to its first-ever MIAC regular season championship. The physical education major also coached soccer and golf at one point at Bethel and was a hockey assistant coach at Park/Woodbury High School. While in college, Johnson participated in soccer, hockey, and baseball, earning All-Conference and All-Region awards. Johnson holds many all-time records for Bethel in soccer and baseball.
Frost and Johnson's team upended the Badgers 4-2 on March 18, claiming the University of Minnesota's third NCAA women's hockey title.
