Royals Tie Pacific and Fall to Willamette in Oregon

Kelsey Flaherty scored the first goal of the weekend
SALEM, Ore. - Continuing play in Salem, Oregon this weekend, the Bethel Women's Soccer team took on Pacific University and Willamette University in search of adding to their 1-0 record. On Saturday afternoon the Royals played to a 2-2 tie against Pacific. During Sunday's match-up, Bethel was defeated 5-3 by Willamette.

The Royals came out strong early in Saturday's game as Kelsey Flaherty (So., Shoreview, Minn.) added a goal within the first two minutes to put the Royals up 1-0, with an assist from Sophie Christiansen (Jr., Portland, Ore.). The score remained 1-0 heading into the second half of play until Pacific tied up the game with a goal at the 61:02 mark. Just minutes following the Pacific goal, Ellen Potts (So., Fargo, N.D.) collected her first goal of the season to put Bethel up 2-1. Unfortunately the lead wouldn't hold as Pacific added their second goal of the game three minutes later to make it 2-2. The game remained 2-2 dwindling into the final minutes. The Royals would have to settle for a tie.

During Sunday's action the Royals fell behind early to Willamette only to respond with a goal from Christiansen assisted by Lydia Bergeson (So., Mauston, Wis.). Willamette would add another goal to make their lead 2-1. Molly Miller (So., Denver, Colo.) answered for the Royals with a goal once again assisted by Bergeson. The 2-2 would remain through the first half of play. In the second half of play, Willamette surged ahead when they added the next three goals to put them ahead 5-2. The lead proved to much for the Royals as they added one more goal from Krista Polding (Sr., Waconia, Minn.), but ultimately lost 5-3.

The Royals continue play on Thursday traveling to Northwestern College for a 5:00 p.m. match-up.
