MENOMONIE, Wis. - The Bethel Royals are only two weeks into the season, but they are already looking strong. The team headed east to compete in the UW-Stout Open where they had four first place finishes, as well as a second and a third place finish.
The 4x400 meter relay team continued their dominance today with a convincing win in 3:22.66. The team, compromised of
Joel Quick (Sr., Johnston, Iowa),
Taylor Ferda (Sr., Whitefish, Mont.),
Zach Schlegel (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.), and
Eric Rhode (Sr., Oakdale, Minn.), beat their nearest competitors by 1.19 seconds. The 4x4 crew also pitched in with their own individual performances. Ferda won the 55 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 7.71 seconds. His time met the national provisional qualifier of 7.74, but he will likely need to lower that time to get into the national meet in March. Rhode, Quick, and Schlegel all competed in the 400 meter dash. Quick won the race in 50.79 seconds followed closely by Rhode in second with a 50.80 second performance while Schlegel finished a strong fifth in 51.81.
Other notable performances were
Dan Greeno (Sr., St. Michael, Minn.) in the mile and
Eric Atherton(Roseville, Minn.) in the high jump. Greeno won the mile in a school-record time of 4:15.99. His time, like Ferda's, met the national provisional qualifier of 4:16.00. Atherton finished a strong third in the high jump with a leap of 1.92 meters.
The Royals will now enjoy a week break and return to action on February 6th when they host their final home meet of the season, the Bethel Invitational.
