ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethel Royals got a chance to see how they compare to other Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletes (MIAC) athletes as they joined six other conference schools to compete in the Pre-Conference Meet, hosted by Macalester.
The Royals claimed first place finishes in six different events, including the high jump, triple jump, 400 meter dash, 600 yard run, 800 meter run, and the 4 x 400 meter relay.
Jay Quick (So., Johnston, Iowa) improved upon his NCAA Championship provisional qualifying leap of 2.03 meters earlier in the season by clearing 2.04 meters (6 feet, 8.25 inches). Another automatic qualifier,
Eric Rhode (Jr., Oakdale, Minn.) finished just .01 seconds off his provisional qualifying performance in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.36 seconds.
Josh Aakre (Fr., Dawson, Minn.) continued to show improvement in the triple jump, this time with a distance of 13.01 meters (42 feet, 8.25 inches), to earn the top spot in the event.
Zach Schlegel (So., Woodbury, Minn.) won the 600 yard race with a time of 1:13.81, while All-MIAC cross country runner
Tyler Hinrichs (Sr., Clara City, Minn.) won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.96, more than four seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.
Finally, the 4 x 400 meter relay team, consisting of
Joel Quick (Jr., Johnston, Iowa),
Taylor Ferda (Jr., Whitefish, Mont.), Rhode, and Schlegel, broke the school record by finishing with a time of 3:21.45.
Other notable finishes included
Josh Allen (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) taking second in the high jump by clearing 1.90 meters (6 feet, 2.75 inches), while
Joel Quick finished third in the 400 meter run with a time of 50.76 seconds.
Ferda placed second in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.75 seconds, and
Tony Hanf (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) finished second in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:40.30. The All-MIAC cross country runner tandem of
Dan Greeno (Jr., St. Michael, Minn.) and
Carl Gladitsch (Sr., Bloomer, Wis.) finished second and third in the mile run with times of 4:20.14 and 4:23.51, respectively.
The Royals are scheduled to head to northwestern Minnesota next weekend for the MIAC Championship meet, hosted by Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. The pentathlon kicks off the weekend-long meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, followed by a 2 p.m. start on Friday afternoon.
