Bethel hosts open track meet to begin indoor season

4 x 400 meter relay team nearly sets new school record

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.
- The Sports and Recreation Center on the campus of Bethel University was the site of today's indoor track and field opener for the Royals. Representatives from five different schools, as well as several unattached individuals competed in the Bethel Open and turned out some strong performances.

For Bethel, the results of note include:

- Nate Tlougan (So., Rochester, Minn.) finished just half a second off the school record of 6.43 seconds in the 55m dash, set by Tony Moses, by finishing with a time of 6.93 seconds.

- Eric Rhode (Jr., Oakdale, Minn.) won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.77 seconds, which is just .29 seconds off the school record time of 22.48 seconds, also set by Tony Moses in 1994.

- Zach Dahl (So., Edina, Minn.) placed first out of four runners in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.47 seconds.

- All-MIAC cross country runner Tyler Hinrichs (Sr., Clara City, Minn.) finished third in the mile run with a time of 4:25.32.

- Taylor Ferda (Jr., Whitefish, Mont.) won the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.02 seconds. Ferda had been studying abroad during the first semester, but is now back to help the 4 x 400 meter relay team as well. He, along with Joel Quick (Jr., Johnston, Iowa), Rhode, and Zach Schlegel (So., Woodbury, Minn.) nearly broke the school record of 3:21.65 today by finishing with a time of 3:21.93.

- Longjumper Ben Bursaw (Fr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) won his event by out-jumping the nearest competitor by nearly 10 inches with a leap of 19 ft. 6.25 in.

- Jay Quick (So., Johnston, Iowa) cleared 5.95 meters (6 ft. 5 1/2 in.) in the high jump to take top honors

The Royals are now scheduled to head to Menomonie, Wis., next Saturday for the UW-Stout Open, which is set to begin at noon.
