BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced the 2019 Women's Tennis Postseason Awards on Wednesday afternoon that saw four Royals among those honored. Also winning a major award was seventh-year head coach
Drew Fernelius who was named the conference's Co-Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Earning a spot on the All-MIAC Singles and Doubles Team were
Grace Riermann,
Maggie Riermann,
Mackenzie Novak and
Jill Weinzettel.
Earning his third Coach of the Year Award, Fernelius led the Royals to new heights in a record setting season. Bethel topped a program record 20 wins following a MIAC Semifinal win over 32nd-ranked Gustavus Adolphus which sent BU to the program's first-ever MIAC Championship match.
Grace Riermann in her rookie season was dominant at the No. 1 singles position where she went 18-3 overall and 8-2 in MIAC play with her losses coming to ranked opponents. Now a two-time All-Conference honoree, sophomore
Maggie Riermann was just as dominant at the No. 2 singles spot going 18-4 and 8-2 in conference. The two sisters teamed up in doubles play becoming a regionally-ranked threat going 20-4 on the year and 8-2 in conference play. At the top doubles spot they began the season winning 16 of their first 17 matches including a 13-match winning streak.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Novak was one of Bethel's most dominating players going 22-2 on the season and 9-1 in MIAC play. Novak won a matches playing as the No. 1 and No. 2 singles in non-conference and was 20-2 as the No. 3 singles player. She finished the year on a six-match winning streak and won 12 of her last 13. She also had a big straight-set win against the Gusties in the MIAC Semifinals giving Bethel its final team point needed to make an appearance in the MICA Championship.
Going down as Bethel women's tennis all-time wins leader with 140 career victories,
Jill Weinzettel earns her first career All-Conference Singles Team honors. Weinzettel surpassed
Mattie Kidder to become the women's tennis career wins leader with 114 wins after defeating St. Olaf and Grinnell College on March 2nd. As the Royals No. 4 singles player she went 18-4 on the year and 8-2 in MIAC play. She held a season record of 19-5 having played one match as the No. 2 singles player and one as the No. 3 singles in non-conference play.
Weinzettel was also named to the 13th annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women's tennis. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
As the Royals No. 2 doubles, Novak and Weinzettel posted a 19-5 overall record and were 9-1 in conference play. A consistent pair, the two won 11 of their last 13 matches including an 8-7 (7-5) victory over Gustavus in the MIAC Semifinals. For Novak it is her second straight appearance on the All-MIAC Doubles Team while Weinzettel leaves as a three-time All-MIAC Doubles Team honoree.
