That was then, during the regular season. Tonight was for all the marbles ... or at least enough marbles to advance to the championship game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoff tournament. Unfortunately for Bethel, their season came to an end tonight with a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Tommies.

PAUL, Minn. - Bethel University goaltender Beth Spurrier (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) has been named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week for her performances during the week of February 16, 2009.

Spurrier led Bethel to a 1-0-1 week that saw them earn three out of a possible four points in the conference standings against #6 St. Thomas with a 1-0 win and a 2-2 tie. Prior to this past weekend, #1 Gustavus was the only other team in the conference to limit St. Thomas to two goals or less in a two game series this season. The three-time All-MIAC goalie shut out the Tommies on Friday night, halting each of the 38 shots that came her way, making her just the second goalie to shut out St. Thomas this season. Spurrier now has 14 career shutouts, which is second best among active MIAC goalies. The following afternoon, she kept the Royals in the game by making 43 saves, giving the team an opportunity to tie, and stopped two shots in the overtime period to preserve the tie. Bethel's win and tie gives the program its best overall and conference record in its 10-year history. Spurrier finishes the regular season in the top third of MIAC goalies for goals against average, save percentage, and winning percentage.

Bethel ties #6 St. Thomas 2-2 to end regular season

BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel Royals closed out the regular season today by earning the third out of a possible four points in the conference standings against the St. Thomas Tommies with a 2-2 tie at Bethel University Arena. The tie gives Bethel an 11-9-4 overall record, and 10-5-3 conference record, which is the best in school history in both instances.

It didn't take long for the Royals to get on the scoreboard as Kelsea Martalock (So., Tomah, Wis.) scored at 1:35 into the first period with the help of #Allison Papko# (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba). However, St. Thomas saw to it that they would not be shut out against Bethel for the third time in a row as they scored two goals just over eight minutes apart, both in the first period.

After a scoreless second period, Papko lit the lamp to tie the game at 2-2 with the help of Mikaela Mahoney (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) with seven and a half minutes remaining. The score remained knotted despite several scoring opportunities by both teams. There were five penalties between the two teams in the overtime period alone, which, at one point created a 5-on-3 advantage for the Royals for 23 seconds.

Today's game also pitted two of the best goalies in the MIAC against each other as Lauren Bradel and Beth Spurrier (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) have 16 and 14 career shutouts to their names, respectively. Spurrier stopped 43 Tommie shots in the tie.
