Bethel pulled within one point with 25 seconds remaining, but Saint Benedict made each of its four free throws down the stretch to win and advance to the MIAC championship game on Saturday night.

PETER, Minn. - It's been a long time coming, but the day has finally arrived. The day when the Bethel University women's basketball program could claim a MIAC postseason victory is here thanks to a 75-59 win over the hosting Gustavus Adolphus Gusties.

There are few people in this world happier with the win than Head Coach Jon Herbrechtsmeyer. Although he can claim Gustavus Adolphus as his alma mater, as a coach, the school has also been a bit of a nemesis. Before tonight, he had never coached a Bethel team that had been able to defeat Gustavus. In fact, the last time the Royals beat the Gusties was in the last part of the season in 2001. Sure, there have been some close games over the years, including the 57-56 heartbreaker earlier this season, but this one was special because this one counted at the right time.

Beasley's 27 helps Bethel cruise past Carleton

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The last time Bethel played against Carleton in women's basketball, the Royals came away with their first victory over the Knights in nearly 12 years. Today, they made it back-to-back wins over Carleton, proving the first time was no fluke. Bethel's 89-58 win gives them their best record since 1996-97 at 14-11 overall and 13-9 in the conference.

Bethel never trailed past the eight minute mark of the first half, using 17 points by Autumn Beasley (Fr., Medina, Minn.) to surge to a 44-31 lead heading into the locker room at half's end. In the second half, the Royals continued their relentlessness, and Beasley again led the charge with 10 points to finish with 27.

Shana Grejtak (So., Franklin, Minn.) was the next highest performer for Bethel with 16 points and eight rebounds - five of them coming on offense. She also had three steals and an assist. Erica Hormig (Sr., Windom, Minn.) was a key factor in the win as well with 11 points, six rebounds, a blocked shot, and an assist. Annegret Nautsch's (Sr., Everett, Wash.) playing time was limited due to two quick fouls in the first half, but she came out in the second half and made up for lost time by scoring all of her six points and grabbed six of her seven rebounds. She now has a career total of 999 rebounds, leaving her one to go to reach the millennium mark.

Bethel's high octane offense slowed by Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. - After a heartbreaking 57-56 loss to the Gustavus Gusties at home in mid-January, the Bethel Royals hit the road thirsty for revenge. Unfortunately, that thirst remains unquenched as the Gusties defeated the Royals 56-44 tonight.

Bethel led for a majority of the first half - by as many as eight at one point - but then Gustavus crept back and took over the lead at the half, 28-26. In the second half, the Gusties turned on the defense and limited the Royals to just 18 points on six field goals and five free throws.

The big factor in the game was Annegret Nautsch (Sr., Everett, Wash.), as in, she was limited to just two points, five rebounds, and two blocks - well below her season average in each category. Kristen Wolters (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) was the only Royal to register double digits with 10 points. She also had the team's high rebound mark with six and added three steals, two assists, and a blocked shot in the effort. Autumn Beasley (Fr., Medina, Minn.) scored seven points, while Taylor Sheley (Fr., Backus, Minn.) and Erica Hormig (Sr., Windom, Minn.) each had six.

Bethel breezes past Augsburg 61-36, clinches playoff spot

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoff picture is now set, and with Bethel's 61-36 win over host Augsburg today the Royals will be in that picture for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

The Royals never trailed and headed to the locker room at halftime with a 33-19 lead thanks to a diverse scoring attack. In the second half, Bethel intensified their attack by going on a 14-0 run to open up a 31 point lead with just four minutes to play.

Both Annegret Nautsch (Sr., Everett, Wash.) and Kristen Wolters (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) finished the afternoon with 12 points and seven rebounds. Nautsch also added six blocks to her season total, as well as a steal and an assist. #Autumn Beasley# (Fr., Medina, Minn.) scored 11 points, while Shana Grejtak (So., Franklin, Minn.) matched that number in rebounds.

The win guarantees Bethel a winning season both overall and in conference play for the first time under Coach Jon Herbrechtsmeyer who took over the program in 2002. The Royals are now 13-10 overall and 12-8 in the MIAC with two games remaining. The 12 wins is the most Bethel has had in the MIAC since the team went to the NCAA playoffs back at the end of the 1996-97 season.

St. Thomas frustrates Bethel, snaps Royal five-game win streak

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The first time the Bethel Royals and St. Thomas Tommies tipped off against each other, the Royals came away with a huge 65-33 win. Tonight, the basketball gods saw it fit to balance things out between the two teams as the Tommies turned the tables and defeated the home team 72-52.

Bethel opened up a five point lead early in the game, but the lead didn't last beyond the five minute mark of the first half, nor did the Royals ever regain it. The Tommies frustrated the Royals with their defense and Bethel never really had a chance to gain any momentum on offense. The Royals made less than a third of their shots from the field tonight and less than half of their free throws in the contest.

Annegret Nautsch (Sr., Everett, Wash.) was the leading scorer for Bethel with 12 points, and for the first time in five games, she did not have a double-double as foul trouble limited her playing time. The starting center corralled just six rebounds, but did add four more blocks to her nation leading total. Reigning MIAC Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week Autumn Beasley (Fr., Medina, Minn.) scored 10 points as Bethel's second leading scorer. She also had two rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal. Shana Grejtak (So., Franklin, Minn.) had the high rebound total for the Royals with 12 and she contributed seven points to the Bethel cause.

Autumn Beasley Named MIAC Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Bethel University's Autumn Beasley (Fr., Medina, Minn.) has been named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week for her performances the week of Monday, February 2.

Beasley was a major factor in Bethel's 3-0 week as she was the Royals' top scorer in each of the three games, and the game's high scorer twice. The starting guard had 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting against St. Catherine in Bethel's 71-54 win last Monday. On Wednesday, Beasley scored a season high 26 points against Hamline as the Royals won 86-70. She was 7-for-13 from the field and 11-for-12 from the free throw line, aiding Bethel to its highest team point total of the season. Beasley then went on to help the Royals close out a perfect week by scoring 16 points in Bethel's 63-41 win over St. Olaf on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 shooting from the free throw line. In addition to being the game's high scorer, she also had seven assists and a pair of steals. Beasley has been Bethel's top scorer in five of the team's last six games and is averaging 18.8 points per game in that span. Since becoming a starter, the Royals have gone 9-3 and she has risen to be the team's second leading scorer and top free throw shooter.

Bethel's winning streak is now at five games - its longest since the end of the 2006-07 season.

The Royals built a commanding lead by jumping out 21-6 and took a 10 point lead into the locker room at the half. In the second half, Bethel reasserted its dominance by building a lead of 28 points just past the midway point of final 20 minutes.

For the fourth game in a row, Autumn Beasley (Fr., Medina, Minn.) was Bethel's top scorer with 16 points. She also had seven assists, two rebounds, and two steals. Annegret Nautsch (Sr., Everett, Wash.) posted her 12th double-double and her fourth in a row with 13 points and an equal number of rebounds. The nation's leading shot blocker had four more today, putting her at exactly 100, which is one better than the number she was credited with last season.

In addition to Beasley and Nautsch, Shana Grejtak (So., Franklin, Minn.) made it into double digits with 11 points, and was left three rebounds shy of a double-double of her own. Grejtak had a pair of assists, a block, and a steal as well.
