ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—The 2013 softball season came to a close in early May after a memorable finish in the final weeks. The Royals not only finished with the best standings in regular season history, but also the best finish in the MIAC Playoffs—both second place. At the conclusion of the season, Bethel's softball team was rewarded with the 2013 MIAC Player of the Year award, which went to shortstop
Angie Jackson, and the 2013 MIAC Coach of the Year award, honoring head softball coach
Rod Radcliffe.
In addition, four total Royals were awarded MIAC All-Conference and one other received MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention. As a team, the Bethel also voted on their own awards, including Most Improved, Rookie of the Year, Most Encouraging, and the BU Award.
Lindsay Edeen was voted on for most improved player, while
Caroline Kivisto and
Karli Persson tied for rookie of the year.
Grace Thompson was honored as the most encouraging and
Rachel Gilbert was given the BU award for the third straight year.
As if the awards were not enough to tell the story of how successful the Royals were, Bethel tallied 49 spots alone in 2013 in the program's record book. Amongst those records was
Angie Jackson's 68 hits and 59 runs scored as well as
Karli Persson's 19 wins and 140 strikeouts in a single season—all which rank No. 1 in their respective categories.
Bethel also slaughtered the previous record in total wins (27), winning streak (11), team batting average (.344), hits (414), runs batted in (273), runs (309), walks (126), home runs (37), and slugging percentage (.510) in a single season.
