NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Four Bethel Royals earned the title of MIAC Champion today at the outdoor track and field championships hosted by Carleton College. Tyler Hinrichs (Sr., Clara City, Minn.), Taylor Ferda (Jr., Whitefish, Mont.), Carl Gladitsch (Sr., Bloomer, Wis.), and Jay Quick (So., Johnston, Iowa) each won their respective event, while the team finished in fourth place out of 11 teams with a collective 102.5 points.

Ferda won the 110 meter hurdles with at time of 14.48 seconds, which improves upon his NCAA provisional time and puts his performance among the top five in the nation so far in 2009. He also broke his own school record by three-tenths of a second with the time. Ferda went on to finish third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.85 seconds.

Joel Quick (Jr., Johnston, Iowa) finished the 100 meter dash in sixth place with a time of 11.19 seconds, and then finished the 200 meter dash in seventh place with a time of 22.46 seconds. Eric Rhode (Jr., Oakdale, Minn.) and Zach Schlegel (So., Woodbury, Minn.) took fourth and fifth place in the 400 meter dash with times of 48.90 and 49.55 seconds, respectively.

Ferda, Quick, Schlegel, and Mark Stockhowe (So., Burnsville, Minn.) made up the 4 x 400 meter relay team that finished in third with at time of 3:14.71, which improves on the NCAA provisional time the team earned at the Drake Relays and is the sixth best in the nation to date.

Tyler Hinrichs
Hinrichs, a 2008 All-MIAC cross country runner, won the 1500 meter race with a time of 3:58.76. Fellow All-MIAC cross country runners Gladitsch and Dan Greeno (Jr., St. Michael, Minn.) took third and fourth in the 5000 meter run with times of 15:06.60 and 15:07.89, respectively. Gladitsch won the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:27.19, which betters his own school record set earlier this year at the Macalester Twilight meet. Gladitsch and Hinrichs were also part of the 4 x 800 meter relay team that finished second with a time of 7:48.47. Steve Strom (Sr., Jackson, Minn.) and Schlegel rounded out the team.

In field events, Jay Quick repeated as the conference high jump champion by clearing 1.99 meters (6 feet, 6.25 inches). Quick, along with four other jumpers made up five out of the top 11 finishers in the event. Jake Murphy (So., New Brighton, Minn.) was Bethel's second highest finisher at 1.93 meters (6 feet, 4 inches).

Bethel athletes will have one last shot to qualify for the national meet at the Last Chance Qualifier at UW-Lacrosse on Thursday.
