Spring break trip to San Diego kicks off outdoor season

SAN DIEGO - A number of student athletes from Bethel University's men's track and field team spent some of their spring break out in sunny southern California to participate in the Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) Collegiate Open. Six individuals finished in the top spot in his respective event.

Bethel men took four of the eight spots in the 100 meter dash, including Joel Quick (Jr., Johnston, Iowa), who finished first with a time of 11.06 seconds. Zach Dahl (So., Edina, Minn.) finished third in the 100 meter and went on to place second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.47 seconds.

Eric Rhode (Jr., Oakdale, Minn.), fresh off of an All-American performance in the 400 meter race at the national indoor track and field championships, won the outdoor version of the event handily with a time of 48.38 seconds, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Tyler Hinrichs (Sr., Clara City, Minn.) also achieved an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:54.80, more than a full second ahead of his nearest competitor. In addition to Rhode and Hinrichs, Taylor Ferda (Jr., Whitefish, Mont.) joined the provisional party with a time of 14.88 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles, which was good for a second place finish.

Carl Gladitsch (Sr., Bloomer, Wis.) won the 3,000 meter steeple chase by more than 16 seconds with a time of 9:52.83, while the 4 x 400 meter relay team finished first with a time of 3:17.22.

In field events, Jay Quick (So., Johnston, Iowa), also a competitor at the NCAA indoor national championship meet, took top honors in the high jump by clearing 1.98 meters (6 feet, 6 inches).

Bethel is scheduled to return home to compete in the Central Invitational, hosted by Central College of Pella, Iowa, on Saturday, April 4.
