ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Although the Bethel University women's indoor track and field team was idle last weekend, they hit the ground running this weekend as hosts of the BU Invite at the Sports and Recreation Center (SRC) on campus.
A number of Royals took top honors in their respective categories including defending indoor mile run national champion
Marie Borner (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.), who earned an NCAA provisional time in the 800 meter run at 2:16.05 which was 11 seconds better than the next runner. All-MIAC and NCAA All-Region cross country runner
Heather Jelen (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) also won her event rather handily by finishing the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:01.44, more than 18 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Finally, Bethel's 4 x 400 meter relay team finished with a time of 4:08.82 to round out the first place finishes for the Royals in track events.
In field events, Bethel claimed four of the top five finishes in the long jump, including
Amy Neubauer (So., Rogers, Minn.) and
Huldah Omesa (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) who each had leaps of 16 feet, three inches (4.95 meters) to place first and second, respectively.
Leah Jackson (Sr., Fridley, Minn.) won the triple jump by more than three feet at 31 ft. 1.25 in (10.09 m), while
Vanessa Moore (Sr., Grantsburg, Wis.) won the high jump at 5 ft. 3.25 in (1.61 m). Jackson and Moore ran neck and neck in the 55 meter dash to finish second and third, respectively. Jackson edged Moore by just .01 seconds with a time of 7.64. Moore also went on to a third place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.10.
The Royals are schuduled to head north next weekend for the Lake Superior Challenge, which begins at noon on the campus of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.
