DULUTH, Minn.
- The Bethel University men's track and field team headed north to compete in the Lake Superior Challenge, hosted by St. Scholastica. Among the schools with athletes at the meet were Augsburg, University of Minnesota Duluth, St. Scholastica, UW-Superior, Bemidji State, Lakehead University, Michigan Tech, and Northern Michigan.

Although there were no team scores, half a dozen of Bethel's athletes took the top spots in their respective events. Both the Quick brothers, Joel Quick (Jr., Johnston, Iowa) and Jay Quick (So., Johnston, Iowa), were winners with Joel claiming victory in the 200 meter dash, just .03 seconds ahead of teammate Eric Rhode (Jr., Oakdale, Minn.), with a time of 22.70 seconds. Meanwhile, Jay was the clear winner in the high jump, defeating his nearest competitor - Bethel's Ben Bursaw (Fr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) - by almost six inches with a leap of 6 feet 8 inches (2.03 meters).

Rhode would go on to win the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.35 seconds and fellow 4 x 400 meter relay teammate Zach Schlegel (So., Woodbury, Minn.) won the 600 meter run by more than a second with a time of 1:23:28.

Two of Bethel's three All-MIAC cross country runners won today as well. Tyler Hinrichs (Sr., Clara City, Minn.) claimed victory in the mile run by more than two seconds with a time of 4:19.57. Carl Gladitsch (Sr., Bloomer, Wis.) also had a margin of victory greater than two seconds in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:57.84.

Other notable performances included Taylor Ferda's (Jr., Whitefish, Mont.) third place finish in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.03 seconds, as he was the top Division III hurdler; and Bethel's 4 x 400 meter relay 'B' team finished second to UMD's 'A' team with a time 3:28.50.

The Royals are scheduled to come back to the Twin Cities metro area to compete in the Snowshoe Open at the University of Minnesota next Friday evening, beginning at 5 p.m. for their next meet.
