BLAINE, Minn. - Two third period goals decided the outcome in today's game as the Bethel Royals fell to UW-Stevens Point, 4-2.
Stevens Point opened up the scoring in the first period, with Jessica Edward getting the goal at 10:19, assists to Erin Marvin and Erika Geenen. Bethel answered four minutes later, scoring on the power play, the goal going to
Hillary Hartwig (Fr., Elk River, Minn.), assisted by
Kate Wahlin (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) and
Kassy Sullivan (Jr., Roseville, Minn.).
In the second period, it was the Royals who struck first, the goal scored by
Steph Van Guilder (Jr., Roseville, Minn.), assists going to
Rachael Geng (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) and
Cali Miller (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.). At 14:56, the Pointers answered with a power play goal of their own, put in the net by Michelle Lunneborg, assisted by Sarah Phillips and Sarah Dusold. UW-Stevens Point put 20 shots on goal in the second period, partly due to a 5-on-3 power play, but
Jess Newstrom (Fr., Cambridge, Minn.) held off the flurry of shots to keep the score tied.
The third period would not be as kind to the Royals, as the Pointers found open ice and capitalized twice in the period. The first goal came half way through the third, when Lunneborg took a pass from Tracy Butler and buried it in the back of the net. UW-Stevens Point would strike again less than a minute later when Edward scored putting the Pointers up for good at 4-2, assisted by Marvin.
For the game, the Royals were out shot 38 to 23. UW-Stevens Point was 1-6 on power plays and Bethel was successful on 1-5.
Anna Carlson (So., Roseville, Minn.) and
Biz Huss (Fr., Beaver Bay, Minn.) led the Royals with four shots on goal and Carlson led Bethel with a plus one rating. Newstrom made 34 saves in her first start as a Royal. Dana Carothers, Philips, and Edward led the Pointers with six shots apiece.
After the loss, Bethel drops to 0-2 for the season and UW-Stevens Point improves to 3-1. The Royals do not play again until Friday, when they host Lindenwood University (Mo.) at 5 p.m., in the Bethel University Arena.
