BLAINE, Minn
. - In a game riddled with penalties, the Royals were on the power play eight times in tonight's game, Bethel was unable to capitalize against UW-Eau Claire, falling 2-0.

Eau Claire opened up the scoring halfway through the first period to make the score 1-0. The goal was scored by Allison Malechek, with the assists going to Christine Dickinson and Toni Simones. Neither team was able to score during the second period even though the Royals were on the power play four times during the period.

The score would remain 1-0 until 8:39 in the third period when Beth Dittrich scored on the power play, putting the Blugolds up 2-0, assists to Kelli Johnson and Jackie Mckay. Dittrich's shot found its way into the net because of traffic in front of the Royal goaltender, who partially blocked the shot before it trickled in behind her. Bethel would get three more chances on the power play to end the game, but were unable to get the puck past the Blugold goalie.

Paige Lemieux (So., Fargo, N.D.) led the Royals with five shots on goal, while Kate Wahlin (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Molly Eagles (Fr., Falcon Heights, Minn.) added three more apiece. Dittrich put four shots on goal to lead the Eau Claire and Danika Porter made 20 saves in net. For the game, Bethel out shot the Blugolds 20 to 15.

Bethel is now 0-1 for year and the Blugolds improve to 1-1. The Royals play again tomorrow against UW-Stevens Point. The game will start at 2:30 pm at Bethel University Arena in the National Sports Center in Blaine.

Athletes of the Week
Heather Jelen
Women's Cross Country
Heather Jelen (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) will join fellow Bethel runners Marie Borner and Dan Greeno at the NCAA Cross Country national championship meet thanks to her performance last weekend. Jelen finished 15th out of 183 runners with a time of 22:36 to secure her second straight appearance at the national meet. As a team, the Royals finished 8th out of 26 squads.
Kyle Dynan
Men's Hockey
Kyle Dynan (Sr., Orono, Minn.) was a major factor in Bethel's 2-0 conference start as he earned five points in both victories over Saint John's last weekend. The senior defenseman took just two shots on goal, but made them both count as he scored a goal early in the third period on Friday night to help Bethel take a 3-2 lead in a game the Royals eventually won 5-3; and then on Saturday, he scored what proved to be the game-winning goal late in the second period of Bethel's 3-1 win. Dynan also added three assists to give him a five-point weekend, and the Royals were the only active team to win their first two games of the MIAC season.
