ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Thanks to the generosity of students, fans, and other donors, the Bethel University women's volleyball team raised more than $1,000 for the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery last Friday during their game against Augsburg. The team raised the funds by taking donations in the form of votes for the Bethel faculty member fans would most like to see duct taped to the wall.

“We are so pleased to have had the opportunity to create some awareness about the needs of the Greater Minneapolis Crisis nursery, and I was overwhelmed by the generosity of the Bethel student body, faculty, and Bethel parents," said Head Coach Gretchen Hunt.

"To raise over $1000 in under 48 hours was more than I could have hoped for. I am personally deeply thankful to Sandi Horn, Thomas Mueller, Rick Meyer, and especially Jeff Westlund for their involvement. We are looking forward to a continued relationship with the Crisis

Nursery as we pursue volunteer opportunities for our team. With the economic crisis, more families are under stress, and while no parent plans to harm or neglect their child, when families are under stress it is more likely to happen. The Crisis Nursery is a wonderful organization and we are so fortunate to begin this partnership with them,” added Hunt.

Head men's basketball coach Jeff Westlund was the lucky (or unlucky) faculty member to be taped to the wall during the entire third set of Bethel's 3-2 win over Augsburg.

Nearly 8,000 children were abused and neglected in Minnesota last year. Thirty-four sustained life-threatening injuries and 14 died.  The Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery works to end child abuse and neglect and create strong, healthy families by offering a warm, loving, and safe place where kids get to be kids while their parents take care of a family emergency. The Nursery gives parents a supportive, safe, and non-shaming environment in which to ask for help.
